2024 is a milestone year for Old Hickory Credit Union. You see, back in 1934 a group of determined individuals knew there had to be a better alternative to the banks in our area. With the Great Depression in full swing, the Federal Credit Union Act of 1934 was signed into place allowing credit unions to organize throughout the country under charters approved by the government. The purpose? To make credit available to all Americans and promote thrift through cooperative, member-owned institutions. 

Our founders knew they had to act. They knew that there needed to be a better solution where members could get the help they need at an affordable and reasonable cost. They knew that, collectively, they could help their coworkers, friends and neighbors, and they were willing to take the risk to do so. This was a huge undertaking, but one that has stood the test of time. In fact, their actions are still helping our community now, 90 years later.

But, what if they had never taken that chance? What if even one of them had said, “We can’t form our own credit union?”

Well, they would’ve found out that – can’t never could. As we look back on our 90 years with gratitude and fond reflection, we are proud to serve our members who know that the only thing stopping them from success is the word “can’t.” These members understand their credit union membership not only improves their own financial lives but allows us to help others in our communities as well. Those who refuse to say “can’t” but rather say, “We can.”
